National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College and shares the same origin as the Jiaotong universities in mainland China. In 1958, NCTU was re-established in Hsinchu City. Since then, the University had become the forerunner of science and technology in Taiwan and laid a firm foundation for the Hsinchu Science Park, the "Silicon Valley" of Taiwan. Over the years NCTU has become one of the most prominent universities in Taiwan. As a center of academic excellence of international repute, it has made significant contributions to the development of information, communication andoptoelectronics sciences and technology. A consequence of this has been the huge contribution the University has made to the economic development and consequent prosperity of Taiwan. Over the past two years, we have been crafting a 10-year blueprint that focuses on new directions the University should be moving in. These include taking a lead in integrating the fields of engineering, medicine, and life sciences to effectively develop biomedical technologies, and in melding energy developments with environmental imperatives, in order to make a greater contribution to the future well-being of humanity. NCTU Mission • To cultivate the next generation of high-tech leaders through diverse and holistic education • To explore new knowledge with state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary research • To take a lead in innovative and progressive technological research and development Culture of Innovation and Entrepreneurship NCTU encourages innovation. The University has filed 339 patents and completed 88 technology transfers in 2010 alone. In fact, more patents have been granted to NCTU than any other university in Taiwan, and the revenue generated b~ technology licensing at NCTU is more than any other in the nation. NCTU Innovation and Incubation Center provides legal and management consultation to young entrepreneurs. Creative students are constantly coming up with innovative business ideas. One of the success stories is that of WRETCH.CC, the largest blogging and online photo sharing community in Taiwan, which was acquired by Yahoo! in 2007.Internationalization NCTU has an increasingly internationalized campus and has attracted students from more than 60 countries. The University is also expanding partnerships with leading industries and prominent academic and research institutes around the world as part of the commitment to internationalization. The Office of International Affairs has been established to promote the internationalization process and enhance the global presence of the University. To date, NCTU has entered into nearly 300 international collaboration agreements, including dual degree programs, sister universities, and joint research projects. English-taught courses are offered in all nine colleges, while Chinese language courses are available for international students free of charge. One example of international collaboration is the NCTU Europe Office, which was set up at Chalmers University of Technology in 2003 in Sweden to assist exchange students in Europe while the Chalmers Asia Office was also set up on NCTU campus to assist their exchange students in Asia. As the University continues the drive for internationalization, it is constantly looking for opportunities for collaboration and exchange in all areas. Read less
