Master of Fine Arts - Film and TelevisionThe Master of Fine Arts (Film and Television) gives experienced film and television practitioners, and high-level film students, the opportunity to engage in independent research in their field. The degree will enable student researchers to develop mastery and advance the practice and theory in their field.Candidates will propose, and with their supervisor, will develop their own topic for research. Most commonly the project will not be production based. For example, a suitable creative project might be writing a completed feature film script or researching an aspect of film and television practice. Projects may contain some elements of production where appropriate (e.g., a trailer or short animation).While primarily self-directed, students will work with one or two supervisors from the School of Film and Television’s academic staff. Selection of candidates depends on the school’s ability to match applicants’ projects with available supervision. Master of Film and Television The Master of Film and Television is a practice-based graduate coursework degree studied full time over two years, with the option to exit after Year One with a Graduate Diploma of Film and Television.Students specialise in one stream chosen from Narrative, Animation, or Documentary. Please note: there will be no entry into Year 1 for Animation in 2013. Applicants may only apply for direct entry into Year 2 (assuming the selection criteria is met)Students are trained in research methods, screen language and writing, and then write, direct and edit their own productions. Each student assumes responsibility for the creative and technical production of a major project at a professional level.The Graduate Diploma in Film and Television is an exit qualification for students who have successfully completed the first 100 points of the course. Master of ProducingThe Master of Producing is a practice-based graduate coursework degree, taking eighteen months of full-time study that focuses on the creative and business aspects of being a successful producer in the film, television and allied industries.The programme will extend your creative abilities and business skills by requiring you to work in the role of Producer on student films; you will develop a sound understanding of the Australian film, television and allied industries, and produce a short creative project.Admission is based on completion of a three-year undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification and an interview.The School of Film and Television at the Victorian College of the Arts has an international reputation for the high quality of its graduates and student productions. Master of ScreenwritingThe Master of Screenwriting is a practice-based graduate coursework degree taking eighteen months of full-time study. Admission is based on completion of a three-year undergraduate degree, creative writing portfolio and interview. The course is designed for those who have a desire to write audience-engaged stories for a visual medium and for people wishing to work as professional screenwriters.Semester One of the three-semester course is teaching intensive, with students being introduced to many facets of screenwriting. Students take part in ‘Storytelling Workshops’ which analyse the universal essentials of storytelling. Students also attend lectures, classes and screenings dedicated to the craft of screenwriting and undertake intensive modules focusing on feature film and television writing.Semester Two focuses on writing a first draft of the student’s major project. Students develop their script with the assistance of script tutorials, feedback from their lecturer and peers and a unique script development hothouse. During this semester, students also gain skills in giving and receiving creative feedback on their scripts. A first draft feature screenplay, or a TV Bible plus episode(s) of a script, are the expected outcomes after Year One. In Third Semester, students are expected to implement skills they have learned in Year one to focus on redrafting their major project as they head towards a second or third draft of their major script.
