The Universidad de la Cuenca del Plata (UCP) was born in 1993 at the impulse of the Jean Piaget Foundation (1992) whose antecedents, as the Jean Piaget Institute, came from primary and secondary education since 1982. In 1993 the UCP received authorization provisional to function and from 1994 it began its activities with three faculties - Social Sciences, Economic Sciences and Engineering - and four undergraduate careers, Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Food Engineering with an intermediate degree of University Technician in Food Analysis, Bachelor's Degree in International Trade with an intermediate degree of University Analyst in International Trade and a Bachelor of Administration with an intermediate degree of University Analyst in Organization Administration.

Thus, as of 2007, new careers were created with the purpose of providing an educational offer according to the requirements of the socio-cultural context of the region, interacting with the various sectors of the environment. After the completion of the Institutional Self-Assessment Report (IA), it was decided, based on conclusions that emerged during its development, to expand the number of faculties from three to five. Thus, in 2014 the structure of faculties was modified, being made up of Academic Units named below.
