Effective communication networking makes the world go digital
Digitalisation is here to stay. The ongoing digitalisation builds on an efficient communications infrastructure.
The Master's Programme in Communication Systems and Networks equips students with excellent abilities to become valued experts in communication systems, both in Finland and abroad.
The ongoing and all-encompassing digitalisation process, which will eventually penetrate all industries and the whole society, builds largely on efficient communications infrastructures. The associated Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet paradigms refer to the future connected and the programmable world, where not only people but also all things are able to communicate. They will have a significant impact on different vertical industries, such as energy, transportation, logistics and manufacturing. Another prevailing trend in society and industry is robotisation. Modern inventions, such as self-driving cars and drones, strongly rely on highly efficient and reliable wireless communications.
The studies in communication systems and networks focus on the Future Internet, computer networks and the evolving and emerging (4G, 5G and beyond – 6G) wireless broadband and multi-service communication systems, which are crucial elements for the future connected world.
As a student, you can freely specialise in either of the following focus areas:
- Networking and Computer Networks
- Radio Systems and Networks

The spesialisation in Radio Systems and Networks provides students with a theoretical understanding and skills related to the practical optimisation and planning of wireless radio communication systems and networks.
Tampere University offers a unique learning environment for Communication Systems and Networks. Please see additional information on research conducted in the field of Communication Systems and Networks at Tampere University.
Communication Systems and Networks (MSc Tech) is one of the engineering specializations in the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering.
As a student you can freely specialize in either of the following focus areas:
- Networking and Computer Networks
- Radio Systems and Networks
The specialization in Networking and Computer Networks covers various aspects of wired and wireless packet-switched networks and the Future Internet. The compulsory courses explore local and wide-area wireless and wired networks, providing students with in-depth knowledge of concepts such as TCP/IP protocol suite, MAC-level algorithms and methods, and networking paradigms (e.g. peer-to-peer networking). The specialization in Radio Systems and Networks provides students with a theoretical understanding and skills related to the practical optimization and planning of wireless radio communication systems and networks, such as 3GPP HSPA, LTE, LTE-Advanced, and emerging 5G NR and 6G networks, as well as IEEE 802.11 type WiFi systems, based on an in-depth understanding of digital communications, radio propagation and system-level RF issues.
Major studies and master's thesis projects are closely linked to the research activities of the Wireless Communications research group of Tampere University, which maintains close collaborations with the industry.
Tampere University offers students the opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. A rich variety of minor studies and supplementary courses are available, as well as the opportunity to concentrate purely on major studies.
Structure of studies
The program is comprised of 120 ECTS. Courses are worth 90 ECTS and the remaining 30 ECTS are awarded for successfully completing a master's thesis. Each ECTS is equal to an average workload of 27 hours, including lectures, exercises, assignments, independent study, and an examination. The duration of the program is two years. Students spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the final project (master's thesis). They start their studies in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.
The studies in the field of Communication Systems and Networks place special emphasis on the Future Internet, computer networks, and the evolving and emerging (4G, 5G, and beyond – 6G) wireless broadband/multi-service communication systems. While the focus is on radio access systems and networking levels, physical layer digital communication techniques and system-level RF aspects are also within the scope of this major.
The specialization of Communication Systems and Networks in the Master's Programme in Information Technology equips students with excellent abilities to become valued experts in communication systems, both in Finland and abroad. A master's degree from this program is highly respected, and our graduates enjoy excellent employment rates.
Scholarships and Funding
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships awarded at admission cover 100% of the tuition fees for the program duration. The program duration is
- three years for Bachelor’s degrees
- two years for Master’s degrees
- five years if the study right is granted for both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree.
Finland scholarships awarded by Tampere University are part of the national Finland Scholarship program. Applicants to Master's programs are eligible to apply. Finland scholarships are awarded at Tampere University to the most merited applicant in each Master's program.
Finland scholarships cover the program tuition fee for the first year of studies and include a 5000 € relocation grant, paid to the student's Finnish bank account after the student has arrived in Tampere and started studies at Tampere University.
In addition, Tampere University awards a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship for the second year of studies to all recipients of the Finland scholarship. The scholarship covers 100 % of tuition fees in the second year of studies.
Early bird offer
In addition to scholarships, an early bird offer is available at admission to all fee-paying students, excluding students who have been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship or a Finland scholarship at admission. The early bird offer gives a 50 % reduction on the program tuition fee during the first year of studies.
Students may take advantage of the early bird offer by accepting the offered study place and paying 50% of the first-year tuition fee within two weeks after receiving information on admission.
This offer is valid only for the first year of studies. During consecutive years of study, all fee-paying students are eligible to apply for Tampere University Scholarships awarded during studies.
Graduates are typically employed by mobile communication network operators, R&D houses, wireless devices, network vendors, consulting companies, and research institutes. Following the successful completion of the program, our graduates will also be eligible to apply for admission to doctoral programs in Finland or abroad.
Overall, the global mobile communications industry is a massive employer with an annual volume of close to 900 billion USD. The field offers excellent career prospects worldwide. With the utilization of the communications infrastructure penetrating into all industry sectors as a result of digitalization, experts in communications engineering also have a broad range of career prospects, for example, in the energy, transportation, and automotive industries as well as in different production and manufacturing verticals which are outside the basic ICT field.
Co-operation with other parties
Tampere university is a well-known institute among the companies in Tampere area, Finland and abroad. The university has a good reputation and has had a lot of co-operation with the companies during the years. This certainly helps the students to find valuable thesis-work opportunities in the companies, and most often, those students are employed by these companies once graduated.
In addition to studies in one’s own programme, students may take full advantage of the teaching offered by the Tampere higher education community ranging from technical to vocational studies in various fields.
