Introduction
Study to become a wind instrument professional under the guidance of the best possible teachers and network with both current and future top musicians.
Why study here?
Come and study at one of the best performing arts universities in the world. You will get a wonderful opportunity to play in a symphony orchestra from the very first year of your studies. The Orchestra Academy of the Helsinki Music Centre and the close-knit cooperation between professional orchestras allow you to collect hands-on work experience. You will get to network with current and future top musicians already as a student.
Content and objective of the program
You can choose flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, or tuba as your major subject.
Graduates from the Sibelius Academy know the essential repertoire, styles, techniques, and interpretations of their respective instruments as well as the key orchestra repertoire of Western art music. They work as soloists or versatile chamber and orchestra musicians and have acquired at least the basic pedagogical competence.
During the 2.5-year master’s studies, you will deepen your competence in your major subject, but you may also choose optional studies in e.g. orchestral performance, chamber music, contemporary music, early music instruments, and performance practice.
You can also choose courses organized by the other two academies of the University and complete so-called joint studies that are available for all students.
Teachers
Our teachers are some of the best experts in their respective fields. In addition to the permanent teaching staff, the program welcomes international top experts as guests on a regular basis.
Program Outcome
A student who has completed a Master’s degree is expected to have attained a standard of artistic expression, instrument performance skill, and faculties for music comprehension that he/she is competent to undertake demanding professional duties as a soloist, an orchestra or chamber musician, and/or a music pedagogue.
